I'm going to Perth Australia in early October this year. It will be a two week vacation. I would like your(and any others out there) recommendation on which bike to rent('hire' they call it there). Either a gs f800 or gs r1200. I'm going to rent for a week. Dollar wise, there is not much difference. For me, my experience is, I have a k1200lt 2006 that I've put on over 50k miles in four years. 40 yrs ago, I've had an r750/7 that I road cross country. I'm 66 and have had 3 others in my life. I'm not a fan getting off road, but I want to rent a BMW while I'm there. There might be some off road options for me there maybe on a beach. I like this review of the 800. I do like touring around. So, 800 or 1200? I love my LT!
    Keep pressing on brother!

Im looking at possibly buying a 2005 f 650 GSA with 34k. Can you give me your thoughts on this bike? I've had sport bikes and harleys, but the whole adventure bike class is new to me.

Great video. But after owning both bikes, I would say that the R1200gs "feels" lighter than the f800gs or f850gs. Reason being, the weight sits lower.
Put both bikes next to each other, and lean each one over. Yes the r1200gs is wider and weighs more. But it's a serious competitor in terms of how the weight is distributed.
That being said I just bought another F800gs because of its width and price being less.

Pushing your religious beliefs in a motorbike review is both irrelevant and patronising. If I want to be preached at I’d go to church on Sun morning. Of course that would be a waste of a couple of hours that I could be riding.

i had one for 3 years….brilliant bike, very light, nimble, easy to work on , at the time they didnt do road tyres for this bike so not too confident on fast bends …but apart from that i would really recommend one.

Dual purpose bikes are comprises. "Enduros" now Adventure have been around for decades, now just bigger more street than dirt. Engine made in India or somewhere not Germany.

I did a test drive with the F800GS and I really wanted to like the bike but after a 30 min. drive I was glad to return it at the dealer, really hated the handling and the way it cornered (doesn't…)

After my complains the dealer persisted to test the R1200GS which I initially declined since it looks (and is) way heavier, however after turning the first corner I was immediately in love. How nimble the bigger brother steers is incredible, and since then I drive it every day – summer and winter 😍

I think you hit the proverbial nail squarely on the head when you compared the appeal of so-called Adventure bikes to that of Jeeps and similar Vehicles capable of going off road but which are seldom if ever taken there by their owners.

How lot of stuff to correct. I own a r1250gsa. It's near 550 lbs making it 150lbs heavier.

The fuel tank which is under the seat on your bike. On the 1250 gsa it extends down to the cylinders putting the weight even lower. Also my cylinders are lower than that bike. You really need to ride a 1250 to feel the weight balance. I promise you will be surprised and astonished.

ABS blinks until the wheel moves so it detects the wheel spin all BMW ABS work that way.

My bike puts out 130hp at 130 ft lbs at the rear wheel so they aren't compatible regarding performance.

I'm 5'10 and have a 30" inseam. Any shorter you won't be able to get both feet down.

Chain vs final drive. Yes FD goes out between 30-70k miles and repairing is going to be some money. Likely sub 2k if BMW does all the work. I pulled the unit on my r1150gs and had BMW do it. Less than $600 out the door. But I have 0 regular maintenance. It's really great for commuting or just long trips in dusty sandy conditions.

I just had to stop mid video because it's not a fair comparison. Please go get a demo ride on a 1200 or 1250 as a basis.

Love my F800GS ridden it in 14 states and one Canadian Provence. Carries the wife and I  no problem. Pretty good off road but when I'm serious about off road I take the TW200.

Awesome bike! I have a 2015 F800GSA. I've put it through the ringer with trails in the Ozarks, street riding old Route 66 , gravel roads, fire roads, and it handles it all. It's way more capable than I am. Its rugged too, dropped probably 15 times at slow trail speeds, no damage. Never had one problem. I keep TKC 80s on it most of the time for max traction off road. Vibbs a little over 75 mps but its minimal. Id recommend it to anyone in the market for adventure.

The increased interest in Adventure Bikes is largely due to the overall poor condition of Streets, and Highways in many parts of the U.S.

Excellent video. You’ve hit on a lot of topics gor the viewers to ponder. I would love to know the make of the windscreen on your tester. Is an optional BMW one or aftermarket? It looks more effective than the stock smaller one and it looks like it actually belongs on the bike unlike some aftermarket styles.

LOLOL I laugh at what you say about people buying Jeeps. My wife bought a Wrangler Sahara and it will rarely even see a dirt road let alone off road haha. That looks like a nice bike although I am thinking of trading up my Ninja 1000 for a Honda CB500X as I miss riding on the dirt roads and my wife won't let me take her Wrangler. LOL

I couldn't agree more about the adventure bike segment. Sadly, the last chapter of the Longway Series, from the bottom of South America, into North America ending near Los Angeles….why is it sadly? They are using the Harley Davidson Live Wire….
